Classic Fine Dining {The David Duncan House}

A friend brought me to The David Duncan House recently for dinner. Without knowing where I was going, I was actually quite dazzled when I first arrived to the restaurant. You can always kind of tell the intention of the person by the restaurant he chooses to bring you for dinner. A huge historic structured house with luxurious looking art deco interior and decorations, I'd say this is the place to impress a girl. We were greeted by friendly staffs who helped us with our coats at the counter and then led us to a table near the fireplace. So far, the experience was good until we ordered our food.

I ordered a medium rare prime rib for my entree which also includes either a soup or  a salad. I got a little bit frustrated after repeatedly explaining to our server if we could pay the price difference to substitute the soup in our meal with a French Onion Soup and to find out that we had to pay the full price for a supposedly 'substitute' instead. So, in the end, we had to order the soup on its own and settled with the extra salad in our meal. At this time, my meter bar had slightly gone down.

As starters, we were served a platter of olives, dill pickles and cottage cheese with a refillable basket of garlic bread. We kept munching on the garlic bread because we liked to soak our bread into the soup. Though, I wished the bread were fresh from the oven. They weren't warm at all.

French Onion Soup - $6.95

Our French Onion Soup that we had to order on the side, was served hot and rich in flavour. It was worth for $7. When my prime rib arrived, I was disappointed. It was not cooked medium rare like what I asked for. It was pretty much all cooked in the center. Luckily, they were willing to replace my prime rib and guaranteed that the second one would be perfect. They didn't lie.

Although this time was cooked the way I wanted, the meat was not as tender as I would hope it to be. I'd say the taste and texture could be a lot juicier and softer. Maybe I'm too used to dining at my favourite steakhouse, Peter's Fine Dining.

When I visit a restaurant for the first time, I'd always try their desserts. From their selections, it is obvious that the restaurant is more classic than experimental. There isn't a huge selection to choose from but it is still enough for me because they have my favourite Tiramisu in the menu. Again, I was disappointed at first sight. It did not look like classic tiramisu but looked more like a giant piece of sponge cake. Then when I had a bite of it, I realize I was wrong. The tiramisu tasted heavenly and super smooth. We also ordered the Spanish Coffee that was prepared at our table. It has Brandy, Tia Maria and whipped cream in it. It was quite entertaining to see how the coffee was put together especially when it was tossed in flames! I never had a coffee that could make my face blushes.

Although, I think the food could be better but what made up for it to me personally, was the person whom I dined with and together with the atmosphere, environment and conversation, the whole dining experience became all worthwhile for a second visit.

Thanks for bringing me here.
