A lot of people start a new year off strong with plenty of resolutions to get fit and stay active. Now, a few months into the year, many people have given up because let’s face it, life can get pretty busy. Here are some ways you can live the active lifestyle that helps you reach your fitness and health goals:

1. Know your why!

If you’ve decided that you want to get active in your life, there’s probably a good reason behind this decision. Whether you’ve signed up for a gym membership or have committed to running 5 times a week, there could be something that prompted your decision to get started.

Having your “why” at the forefront of your commitment to a more active lifestyle will help you stick to it, even on the days when you may feel too busy to do the thing. Having clear goals will help you push through, even on the days when you just want to give up.

2. Invest in activewear and gear.

If you love a cute outfit, you may be someone who’s motivated to keep up with your active lifestyle, because you have the perfect activewear. Investing in quality active gear can be a motivating factor for some people, as the idea of spending money on new fitness clothes makes them want to put them to good use.

Whether you need new slip on sneakers for your weightlifting routine or you invest in mountain bike gear for safe and comfortable mountain biking fun, think about how fun it is to

3. Find an active hobby that you enjoy.

You’ll be amazed at how easy it becomes to stay active and get out there when you find a hobby you enjoy. It may take some time to discover the activity that inspires you to get up and at it in the morning, but once you do, there’s no turning back.

Perhaps you find that the social aspect of soccer motivates you to spend time training and participating in games because you enjoy the camaraderie found in being on a soccer team. It could be that the progressive nature of mountain biking where you learn new skills as you go is something that makes you excited to be outside on a regular basis. When you find that active hobby that inspires you, an active lifestyle becomes like second nature.

4. Team up with an accountability partner

Let’s face it. It’s not the easiest thing to start waking up early in the morning to exercise if you’re used to sleeping in. However, when you have someone who helps to keep you accountable, it becomes a lot easier. After all, if you’ve made a plan to run with your bestie at 6:00 a.m. before work, you don’t want to disappoint them.

An alternative is to hire a personal trainer whose job description somewhat includes being an accountability partner for their clients. They are paid to make sure you do what you say you’re going to do. That sure does make it easier for you to stay active, no matter what.

5. Start off small

A big mistake that many people make when they want to get fit and live a more active lifestyle is that they bite off more than they can chew. If you’re coming from no movement at all and are trying to make progress in your fitness, don’t be afraid to start small.

You can start off with a daily 30-minute walk to start getting used to incorporating fitness into your daily routine. If you have been relatively active in your life but want to increase your fitness level and activity, start building up to a more intensive workout routine by going slow. It’s not uncommon for people to start hot and heavy with their active routines, only to give up from exhaustion before they’ve had a chance to see results.

In Conclusion

With a little bit of awareness, determination, and investment, you can live that active lifestyle that you’ve always dreamed about. Start small, look for an accountability partner, and find something that motivates you to get moving!
